HASH RUN NEAR NGUU TATU

.

GOING UP WAS, IF ANYTHING, VERY TRICKY; WHILE
COMING DOWN WAS TREACHEROUS IN THE LEAST !

Coastweek - - Last Saturday's Hash run was Live, set by Eric "mouth" in the lush countryside off Nguu Tatu.

A veritable trade mark trail from a master Hasher awaited the Swankers full of challenges at every bend, slope and halt.

Starting from the gently sloping hills off the Water Tanks and skirting the Husseini Dairy administration block, the trail wound through the verdant hills, replete with rain gifted splendour and every plant specie in bloom, waving a hearty greeting to all the passing crowd.

After half a kilometer up and down  the main murram, the trail traversed the hills and true to his word, the Hare was faster than the Pack, cleverer and devious.

Twice he took everyone to the mud flats freshly vacated by the just ebbed tide.

No ducking or dipping and everybody were already carrying extra baggage on their shoes ... plodding away, trying to keep erect and avoid slipping.

Freshly laid trail marks led the pack on a double promontory off the seaside, only to find themselves on the wrong hill !

An impromptu 'hold' was created on the sea-bed to work out a strategy.

Going up was, if anything, tricky; coming down was treacherous in the least.

When Ndegwa, yet to be baptized, remarked, "who needs the sun when we can see Mazeras in the west !"

Bravehearts ran down, and others took a more un- conventional, less dignified but nevertheless more effective sand- slide down, creating a miniature land slide in return, with coloured backsides from wet soils and mosses that had just seen the day.

But, once back on the ocean floor (oh, how great that feeling was), going was once again resumed, with honed skills of tracking and trailing.

The final up hill was the tester. By general consensus, the peak was renamed Mt. Lenana and the slow climb began.

Panting and puffing, young and old, runners and walkers, struggled to reach ... not knowing where and what awaited them ahead.

The 60 degree slope, on what was just a goat trail, brought the pack to the heaven on earth.

A sight to behold, stretching a hundred mile in each direction, green and blue with the distant sea hemming the vision, where eyes feasted and hearts soared took everyone by surprise..

And not because the winds were blowing at 15 knots either.

The birds performed an aerial opera with heavenly notes and colors spread like a Persian carpet, capped by a rainbow in attendance.

But, there was still a lap to cover, down hill, bracing against the winds with silently grateful Thanks for the sights presented by the hare, Eric.

Driving back to home base, with 'down-downs' in order and a day well spent, the Pack dispersed reminiscing the afternoon.

Next week's run:

Meet at KENDA'S in Mtwapa, 3:30 p.m.
