Run No. 172 - 17th June 2006
Question: What’s big, hot, throbbing with power, and between your legs?
Answer: A Motorbike.
Saturday afternoon, the sky is overcast, the rain is spitting down, the World Cup is on telly, and there is beer in the fridge. So what do you do? Well the Hash pack headed out to the Bamburi Forest Trails for Hash No.172. That’s dedication for you, either that or the sad Hashers didn’t have anyone to cuddle upto on a cold Saturday afternoon.
The GM R’Hole and Black Meat being in Nairobi for the Rugby, a diminished pack admired the new butterfly pavilion while waiting for Eric Babu a k.a. Mzee Mouth to turn up. So what trail to take - the 3.6 km jogging trail or the 3 km easy trail? OH NO, Mzee Mouth had other ideas – the 10 km Cycling trail. Eee-Jack-U’r-Late pointed out that a cycling trail requires bicycles but such logic did not penetrate Mzee Mouth who was by now slobbering with excitement at the prospect of a 10 km run! Yours truly wondered if he had rabies.
Females being more intelligent than males, the awesome threesome of Kama Sutra, Blondie Hot Looong One, and TongaTinga just wagged their tails and went off down the 3.6 km trail. That was the last to be seen of them as the rest of the pack took up the 10 km trail.
Dense dripping foliage overhead made the narrow trail gloomy while leaves brown with rot covered the ground making it mushy and soft. On either side tall green trees stood row after row like silent wet sentinels. The only sounds were of the raindrops and the panting of the pack. Certainly did not feel like the normal hot and humid Mombasa. One km mark comes up, only 1 km? Feels like have run much more. On On went the trail frequented with large pools of water. Two km mark and no stopping. Steep hills now to make things more interesting and a small deer glimpsed as it sped off in the undergrowth. No marks to be seen and Mzee Mouth turns Sergeant-Major pushing his troops to do that extra bit. Amazingly the 5 km mark is ahead. A road used by the locals and some massive trucks leads past a quarry. Arriving at the biogas plant, a flock of geese add their honking with the Sergeant-Major’s swearing to speed the pack on. A shortcut takes 2km of the trail and leads to the airstrip. Only 2.5 km left and signs pointing to Reception were very welcome. A fresh Mzee Mouth led a sweating, ragged but elated pack in to find the awesome threesome by the lake already deep into Down Downs. Blondie Hot Looong One had found the multitude of entwined millipedes on the trail quite sensual and confessed to carrying in her handbag condoms disguised as condiments, just in case she got “lucky”. A final toast to the Bamburi Cement Company and staff for the wonderful setting of the Forest Trails.
