Run No. 89 – August 14th – Report
Last week’s Hash was run at the most picturesque estuary, offside of Mtwapa. It is amazing how the environs of Mombasa never cease to offer surprises.
After meeting at Moorings, the pack was ably guided on through some of the most challenging lanes to KWETU, the youth training project which is doing an exemplary job . This was the home base and hashers ran all round, blinded by the sheer beauty of the surrounding country side, panoramic rolling hills and woodland.
The trail laid by Ulrike, and assisted by Fina was a good teaser, with semi-wet and all-wet holds in bargain. The run through the ever present orchards and the steep cliffs down to the estuary was pepped up by the antiques of the waterman of the day. Evidently, he was told to be ready with the obligatory coconut wine at 5 . He took it as the Swahili 5 and waited till noon. When confronted with the real 5 o’clock revellers, running and craving the refreshment, he mildly tottered and with flowing hands, and owned up to having finished it all before noon, evidently not to let such a good deal go to waste. He was ordered to produce replacement, which he soon did, and the pack had at least the taste of what could have been!!!!
From the jungle trail, everyone rolled down to the sea-bed and with the tide out, followed the Hares’ shoe marks instead of trail marks. Eric ”Mouth’ had a real tough time being the San leader of Kenyan trackers, tracking the wet sands. Misled again and again, going up and down the sheer 25 feet sandy banks, the true trail was hit upon amidst mangrove shoots and everyone homed on to the Kwetu compound climbing from the sea-side. Wonderful Run and a wonderful job.
Three cheers to the true blue HASHERS who unfailingly present such feasts to eyes and the feet.
