Energy Production through Solid Waste Management in Kenya

TakaNguvu - Waste to Energy

Mombasa Macknon Market, Oct. 2002 Power Generator

It is estimated that the metropolitan area of Mombasa produces approximately 700 - 750 tonnes of bio waste per day. TakaNguvu proposes to construct a biogas plant that will divert substantial quantities of bio waste from the dump-sites. Diverting the total estimated figure for Mombasa would result in an approximate energy supply of 50,000 litres gasoline-equivalent, as well as bio-fertiliser daily.

TakaNguvu proposes the development of a viable sustainable commercial biogas plant, which will initially deal with waste from the metropolitan area of Mombasa, but which will have the potential to be replicated in other areas of Kenya and East Africa, as well as to urban areas in the developing world in general.

Objectives of TakaNguvu

  • Creating income-generating operations for the local community: Jua Kali groups who will deliver the waste to the plant and jobs in the plant itself.

  • Reduction in the amount of biologic active and hygienic hazardous waste materials currently being directed to the dumpsites

  • Production of renewable energy, soil conditioner and fertiliser

  • Provide a model that can be potentially replicated in other areas of Kenya and East Africa.

  • Capacity building in alternative energy and recycling technologies.
